This Privacy Policy explains how LayerNine Ltd (“LayerNine”, “we”, “us” or “our”), the operator of Breefd(the “Service”), collects, uses and protects your personal data. LayerNine Ltd is the data controller for the personal data described here. We handle your data in accordance with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
The data we collect
Information you give us
- Account details— your first and last name, email address, and a password (stored in hashed form by our authentication provider).
- Documents you upload— the files you choose to upload (such as letters, forms or contracts) so that we can read and explain them. These may contain personal information, which you choose to provide to us by uploading them.
Information created when you use the Service
- Generated answers— the plain-English questions and answers we produce from each document, together with a small preview image of the first page.
- Usage & technical data— basic information such as how many pages you have processed, timestamps, device/browser information and log data needed to operate and secure the Service.
How and why we use your data
We use your personal data for the following purposes and on the following legal bases under the UK GDPR:
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Creating and managing your account; storing the documents you upload; reading them and generating plain-English answers; providing the app. | Performance of our contract with you. |
| Verifying your email by one-time code; keeping the Service secure; preventing fraud and abuse. | Legitimate interests / legal obligation. |
| Sending service emails (e.g. verification codes and important notices). | Performance of contract / legitimate interests. |
| Improving and troubleshooting the Service and meeting our legal and accounting obligations. | Legitimate interests / legal obligation. |
Your documents and AI processing
Reading your document is central to how Breefd works. When you upload a file we pass it to an automated AI service to read it and generate the questions and answers. This happens automatically without human review. We use this processing only to provide the Service to you; we do not use your documents or the generated answers to advertise to you, to train AI models, or to sell to third parties. You can delete any document, or your whole account, at any time.
Who we share your data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers (“processors”) that help us run Breefd, each acting under contract on our instructions:
| Provider | What they do |
|---|---|
| Google Firebase | Authentication, database, file storage and backend hosting. |
| Anthropic | AI processing of your document to generate the answers. |
| Resend | Sending transactional and service emails. |
We may also disclose data if required by law, to enforce our terms, or in connection with a business transfer (such as a merger or acquisition).
International transfers
Some of our providers are based outside the UK, including in the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as UK adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Agreement / Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, so that your data remains protected.
How long we keep your data
We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active and for as long as needed to provide the Service. When you delete a document it is removed from your library and permanently purged after a short retention period. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal data, including your uploaded documents and generated answers, within a reasonable period, except where we are required to retain certain information to meet legal or accounting obligations.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- access a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data;
- ask us to delete your data (right to erasure);
- restrict or object to certain processing;

- withdraw consent where we rely on it, at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello.layernine@outlook.com. You can manage and delete much of your data directly in your account settings. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, though we’d appreciate the chance to help first.
Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit, access controls and reputable infrastructure providers. No system is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and to respond promptly to any incident.
Cookies
Our marketing website uses only the cookies and local storage needed to function. The Breefd app uses storage strictly necessary to keep you signed in and to run the Service. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Children
The Service is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
